The requirements

For this guide, we assume you already have an updated version of Kali Linux on your system or a virtual machine (VMware Player is a good choice). Don't forget to perform an update and upgrade prior to running any applications. Open a Terminal and type the following commands to update and upgrade all file packages: apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. You will also need a compatible Wi-Fi adapter that's capable of packet injection. Unfortunately, there are a few options to choose from. The following list shows a few chipsets that work well with Kali Linux. USB adapters using these chipsets should work fine with Kali Linux (http://www.wirelesshack.org/top-kali-linux-compatible-usb-adapters-dongles-2015.html):

  • Atheros AR9271
  • Ralink RT3070
  • Ralink RT3572
  • Realtek 8187L (Wireless G adapters)

The following images show what wireless adapters look like. These are the most common Wi-Fi adapters on the market with a compatible chipset. You can usually find them available for purchase through https://www.amazon.com/:
