Assessing Industrial Internet Applications

Once the business requirements are gathered and validated, it is important to plan the implementation architecture of any Industrial Internet solution. At this stage, the various implementation viewpoints and the architecture patterns are evaluated. Build versus buy decisions and use of IoT platforms are considered. Since the Industrial Internet landscape is still evolving and transforming, it is important to consider current business needs, as well as a couple of years out, when assessing the applications. During the development of the implementation viewpoint, the technological needs of the different functionalities are assessed. The main stakeholders at this stage are the Industrial Internet architects, developers, and system integrators.

When the application implementation strategy is being formulated, it should be built on the previously documented viewpoints of the company. This will ensure that the functional expectations are met in the selected Industrial Internet application architecture landscape. Once the implementation viewpoint is developed, it should provide the architecture framework, including the topology, distribution of the different components, as well as how they are interconnected with each other. The stakeholders also expect details about the protocols selected for communication between the device/machine and the gateway and to the central system. The behavior and the properties of the involved interfaces must be detailed out as well. All these will help map out the implementation details with the business objectives and the functional characteristics of the Industrial Internet solution.
