MANAGING OTHERS

ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE SKILLS you can possibly have is the ability to get the best work out of the best people on a consistent basis—the ability to manage effectively. There is a good chance that sometime soon you will find yourself in a position of supervisory responsibility. If you are not good at it, you will find this to be a tremendously frustrating experience. If you are good at it, you’ll have a chance to increase your productive capacity dramatically by leveraging the time and energy of other people.

Be sure to follow these six guidelines:

 

1.   Empower people through effective delegation.

2.   Make sure people can meet their assigned goals.

3.   Make sure people have the resources they need, and anticipate obstacles to the successful completion of goals.

4.   Coach people by using FAST FeedbackTM.

5.   Reward good performance and nothing else.

6.   Never be abusive.
