CME Sends a Command to the BM

Refer to Figure 34-3 on page 996. Under some circumstances, the CME may need to send a message to the BM. As an example, the CME may detect the hot-install of an IBA module into the chassis. In this case, the CME would instruct the BMA to send a BMTrap(Notice) to the BM as an event notification.

  1. The CME detects the hot-install of a module into one of the chassis slots.

  2. The CME sends a message (in this example, a SendBMTrap) to the embedded switch's IB-ML Agent over its dedicated IB-ML channel.

  3. The IB-ML Agent passes the message to the switch's MME.

  4. The MME passes the message to the BMA.

  5. Refer to Figure 34-7 on page 1016. The BMA formulates a BM request MAD with the following characteristics:

    - ManagementClass = BM.

    - Method = BMSend.

    - AttributeID = Notice.

    - AttributeModifier = 00000000h. Bit 0 = 0 indicates that this is a request (i.e., a command) packet.

Figure 34-7. CME Sends Command to BM

  6. The BMA passes the MAD to the port's GSI for transmission to the BM.

  7. The BM receives the request MAD and processes it.

  8. If the command type in the request packet required a response, the BM would transmit a MAD with the following characteristics:

    - ManagementClass = BM.

    - Method = BMSend.

    - AttributeID = the desired attribute ID.

    - AttributeModifier = 00000001h. Bit 0 = 1 indicates that this is a response packet.

  9. The packet is received by the BMA, passed to the MME, passed to the IB-ML Agent, and, finally, passed to the CME.
