Introduced in 1977, the Apple II was Apple’s first megahit
product. The hardware of this barebones computer was
designed primarily by Steve Wozniak. Steve Jobs over-
saw the design of its elegant plastic case.
Thanks to its low cost and ability to display color
graphics, the Apple II flew off the shelves, making Apple
one of the fastest-growing companies in history and a
vanguard of the personal computer revolution.
By the time it was discontinued in 1993, the Apple II
had become almost ubiquitous in schools and workplaces
around the world. These machines powered Minutemen
nuclear missile silos and designed rolls for player pianos.
Despite its popularity, however, the Apple II is rarely seen
now, having become a museum piece that’s just a foggy
memory in baby boomers’ minds.
But in some circles, the Apple II is still going strong.
You may be surprised to know that the Apple II is
still used in the odd factory and workplace in the United
States. Some developers still make software for it, and
there are small companies that specialize in maintaining
the hardware.
