Spoiling a Pet with Eight iPhones in China
If Apple made inroads in China with iPhone 7 sales, the com-
pany may have an Alaskan malamute named Coco to thank.
More precisely, thanks would go to Coco’s owner, Wang
Sicong, who likes to spoil his dog with treats from the Apple
Store. Wang bought eight iPhone 7s for the pet.
Why eight? Because malamutes like to dig and Wang is
loaded. At least his father, Wang Jialin, is worth an estimated
$30 billion, according to CNN. When the iPhone 7 began ship-
ping and appearing in China, it cost just over $1,000, while
the 7 Plus went for almost $1,200.
Coco is no stranger to seeing his family in the news,
because Wang regularly makes headlines in China. According
to CNN, he is “The Nation’s Husband,” so dubbed because
he is an eligible bachelor who sometimes makes outrageous
comments about women. Last year, he irked folks by posting
photos of Coco wearing two Apple Watches. Xinhua, the offi-
cial news agency in China, said Wang “stained the purity of
the Chinese people” and referred to his celebrity as “coarse”
and “arrogant.”
Apple continues to strive for a greater share of the
smartphone market, but it faces stiff price competition with
companies such as Huawei, whose top-of-the-line smart-
phones cost about half what an iPhone costs.
None of this concerns Coco. On Weibo, a social media
platform similar to Twitter where Coco has his own account,
this well-accessorized canine can be seen basking on a
couch among his unopened iPhone 7s. Coco has 1.6 million
followers, so the account allows Wang to flaunt his extrava-
gant lifestyle. He’s posted pictures of the dog flying in private
jets, sitting next to enormous piles of cash, and posing with
expensive fashion items, such as a leather Hermes leash and
a Fendi handbag. And that’s the point of giving his dog eight
iPhones — to show that he can afford it.
