Paying Tribute with Tattoos
Nothing grants a person rock star status like being tattooed
on someone’s skin. After all, it’s a permanent and deeply
personal way to memorialize someone. It’s not surprising
that some Apple fans feel the need to wear their devotion
to Steve Jobs in such an intimate way.
After the Apple founder’s passing in 2011, tattoo artists
received more frequent requests to ink Jobs quotes or his
face on forearms, biceps, and calves. The most popular
design was a likeness of the Albert Watson portrait, depict-
ing Steve Jobs gazing intensely into the lens with his left
hand resting on his chin. Other clients chose Jobs quotes,
like “Stay hungry. Stay foolish.”
“I’ve seen tons of Jobs/Apple tattoos, especially tattoos
done really well,” said Marisa Kakoulas, a heavily tattooed
author and publisher of the blog Needles and Sins, which
showcases tattoo art in popular culture. “It’s almost like [the]
high design of Apple translates in those tattoo tributes.
“People want to be inspired, and capturing a moti-
vating figure, like Steve Jobs, on skin can be that constant
push toward a goal. Tattoos can express a commonality and
bond — like the Apple logo for diehards of Cult of Mac.”
Here are four distinctive designs and the people who
wear them. While each has a different story, they all say
that Jobs inspires them to stay creative and live life boldly.
