Recently, there have even been a few games released
for this venerable computer, and some musicians perform
and record with it. The Chiptune genre is devoted to the
Apple II’s distinctive 8-bit sound, and country singer Joe
Ely toured to promote an album of songs created with the
Apple II.
There’s even an ongoing computer festival dedicated
to the Apple II: KansasFest. Every year since 1989, 50 or 60
Apple II fans have gathered in Kansas City, Missouri, to cel-
ebrate the machine, making KansasFest the longest-running
computer festival in the world.
“The story for everybody is much the same,” said
Steve Weyhrich, an Apple II fan and longtime user. “It’s the
computer you got to use first, and you stayed with it and
loved it over the years.”
Weyhrich, a family doctor who lives in Omaha,
Nebraska, is also an Apple II historian. In 2014, he authored
Sophistication & Simplicity: The Life and Times of the Apple
II Computer, and he runs a blog called Apple II History at
