StarOffice Initial Setup

The first time you run StarOffice in JDS, you are prompted by the installation wizard to establish a few important settings used by the program. Rather than an installation, this is more like the final stages of user setup and should only take you a few minutes.

Launch StarOffice by selecting Launch StarOffice 7 and the StarOffice Installation wizard begins. (See Figure 7-49.)

Select your language

“English US” is selected by default. Just click Next, unless you need to choose another language. This takes you to Figure 7-51.

Important information

This screen is much like a user-oriented README file. The screen has useful tips on a few items about migration, program features, and where to get further up-to-date information on StarOffice. Use the scrollbar at the right to skim through it. Click Next to advance. (See Figure 7-52.)

The StarOffice Software License Agreement

Figure 7-52. The StarOffice Software License Agreement

Read the terms of the license agreement, then scroll down all the way to the bottom of the license text, check the box labeled, “I accept the terms of the Agreement,” and click Next.

If you disagree with the terms of the licensing agreement, and you do not check the “I accept” box, you will not be able to complete the setup procedure. At this point, each time you launch StarOffice you will run through the setup wizard until you check the “I accept” box to complete the setup procedure.

Figure 7-54 shows the User Data form.

Enter User Data

Figure 7-53. Enter User Data

Enter your personal information in the form. Some people habitually skip over user data entry, leaving the fields blank on this screen. Before you do that, please note that the program uses some of this data from this form to perform certain functions.

StarOffice uses the First Name/Last Name/Initials fields, for example, in the changes tracking feature discussed earlier in this chapter. If you leave your user data blank here, your changes to a collaborative document will appear in the same color as the edits done by the most recent person to make changes. Enter your name here if you want changes tracking to give your edits a different color from those done by other editors of the same document.

In the next screen, Figure 7-54 the default “Workstation Installation” setting is appropriate for most users. (That’s because StarOffice was already installed “locally” within the JDS environment when you completed the JDS installation.) Leave the setting where it is, at “Workstation Installation,” and click Next for Figure 7-55.
