At the very top of the Layers panel is a row of filters that let you narrow things down in the panel. In the top left is the Filter Type pop-up menu where you can choose categories of layers to sort through. For example, the default is Kind, and to the right of it are a bunch of one-click sorting icons: click on the first one to see just your image layers, the next to see just adjustment layers, the next to see your type layers, the next to see shape layers, and the next to see smart object layers. If, instead, you choose Name from that pop-up menu, a field appears where you can type in a layer’s name (well, if you know it). Each category you choose displays a different set of sorting options to the right of it, and they’re all there to help you when you have a huge stack of layers.
