The standard method for dodging (brightening) is to get the Adjustment Brush (K; from up in the toolbar), drag just the Exposure slider to the right (with all the other sliders set to zero—see tip below), and then paint over the areas you want to brighten. For burning (darkening), drag that same slider to the left, darkening the exposure, and then paint over the areas you want darker.
To “zero out” all the sliders (reset them all to zero), click on the + (plus sign) button to the right of the adjustment you want to make (let’s say Exposure, for example). It increases the amount of that one slider to +0.50 (+25 for all the other sliders), and resets all the other sliders to zero. Same thing if you click on the – (minus sign) button to the left—it decreases the amount of that slider (moving it to the left to –0.50 [–25 for all the other sliders], darkening the exposure), and it resets all the other sliders to zero.
