To find the Malcolm Gladwell equivalent in another sport, you'd have to imagine Spud Webb wearing his shoes on the wrong feet and then performing like Michael Jordan. In other words, Gladwell so diverged from accepted good form in this presentation that you just can't believe how good he really was. He spoke too fast, used no visual aids, and scorned the laser pointer entirely. Then, he completely enthralled the audience. One might assume that had he continued to let words pour out of his mouth, those watching would have forsaken homes, families, and appetites just to stay and listen.
Gladwell's strength is his authority and ability to tell stories. Few presenters are as confident off-script as he is. Thus, without anything but his mouth and his hands, he is able to weave his tales and create an intimate connection with a rapt audience. If any one presentation demonstrates the importance of knowing your material inside and out no matter how long it takes, this is it.
