THE AUTHORS

Tom Davenport and Stephen Harding are both senior practitioners with Towers Watson, a global professional services company that helps organizations improve performance through effective human capital, risk, and financial management. Tom, who works out of the San Francisco office, concentrates chiefly on assisting clients in equipping and engaging their people to meet business and financial goals. In addition to numerous articles and book chapters, he is the author of Human Capital: What It Is and Why People Invest It (Jossey-Bass, 1999). Stephen, from the London office, specializes in employee engagement research. He is the author, with Dave Phillips, of Contrasting Values in Western Europe (Macmillan, 1986) and has also published and spoken regularly on how organizations can best engage their employees.

Tom earned a BA, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of California, Los Angeles. He also earned an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, as well as a master's degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley.

Stephen has a BA, Honours, from the University of Swansea in Wales and a PhD in psychology from the University of Sussex, England. He is a chartered psychologist and associate fellow of the British Psychological Society.
