Preface
Physical systems cannot be described exactly by a mathematical model. A model, no matter how
detailed, is never a completely accurate representation of a real physical system.
Robust control is a design methodology that explicitly deals with uncertainty. Robust
control designs a controller such that:
• some level of performance of the controlled system is guaranteed and
• irrespective of the changes in the plant/process dynamics within a predefined class, the
stability is guaranteed.
Robust Controller Design can be done using techniques such as: H
1
, synthesis,
Kharitonov’s theorem, Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI), and Quantitative Feedback e-
ory (QFT), to name a few. Kharitonov’s theorem-based robust controller design is much eas-
ier than other techniques. Successful application of techniques such as H
1
, , LMI, or QFT
requires advanced mathematics and considerable education. On the other hand, Kharitonov’s
theorem-based methods require only algebraic manipulation and basic computer programming
skills.
is book shows how simple controllers such as Proportional-Integral (PI) can turn into
a robust controller by correct selection of its parameters. Kharitonov’s theorem is an important
tool toward this end.
It is assumed that the reader knows the basics of DC-DC converters and linear control
theory. ere are plenty of textbooks available on power electronics and linear control theory.
You can refer to the given references Ang and Oliva [2005]–Rashid [2013] if you need to review
the concepts.
e book is summarized as follows.
Chapter 1 shows how one can extract the uncertain model of DC-DC converters.
Kharitonov’s theorem is used to design the robust controller based on the obtained model.
Chapter 2 introduces the Kharitonov’s theorem. Kharitonov’s theorem is an analysis tool
rather than a design tool. is chapter shows how it can be used as a design tool.
Chapter 3 shows the design procedure with some case studies.
I hope that this book will be useful to the readers, and I welcome comments on the book.
