In acknowledgment of a chilling of relations between
Russia and the United States in 2018, Caviar issued a
titanium-clad iPhone X called Putin’s Ultimatum. The phone
features Putin’s portrait and a soaring nuclear missile. The
point is to emphasize that Russia is “a country to be reckoned
with. It will not be possible to ignore us anymore!” according
to the description on Caviar’s website. Caviar made 99 of
these Ultimatums after Putin announced the development of
a new cruise missile to the Federal Assembly.
“Designs dedicated to Vladimir Putin are very popular
among customers, and it shows how much they support
[him], how much they are proud of Russia and they do not
want to be silent about it,” said Caviar’s Anna Lubova. “Most
of our customers are from Russia. They are owners of busi-
nesses or top managers of big corporations.
“The average customer of Caviar is a person who
appreciates high quality and wants to have a smartphone
that has its own charisma and personality that can never be
mixed up with any other.”
Caviar handles Apple Watches and iPads as well as
Android smartphones. On its website, it brags about some
of its more famous customers, which include Russian actors
and athletes. Actor and expatriate Steven Seagal carries a
Caviar phone. Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst purchased
a gold Putin phone in 2015 while the band toured Russia,
according to the website.
The Caviar brand was founded by Italian jeweler Elia
Giacometti, who attended a Millionaire Fair in Russia in 2010
and attracted attention with an iPhone he had personally
customized. Soon, he was taking orders from his new
wealthy contacts, and the business was born.
The first phones with Putin’s portrait went up for sale
in 2014 and sold out in two days. Since then, some variety of
“Supremo Putin” has been available from the company.
Just after the US presidential election in 2016, Caviar
seized the opportunity to honor Donald Trump, who was
under investigation for colluding with Russia to manipulate
the election’s outcome.
Just two days after the election, Caviar unveiled the
Supremo Trump Changeover iPhone. “This phone is an
expression of hopes for a rapprochement between Russia and
the United States,” Caviar wrote in an Instagram post unveil-
ing the phone, “and the fact that Trump’s benevolent words
about Russia will be followed by actions that will lead to a
change in relations between the great powers for the better.”
