It is not that complicated to go on to work on a complete word. Go back to the principles outlined on pages 66–67 and apply them to your word. Here are a few examples using the word “Letter.” Pay attention to the spaces and the overall uniformity of the volumes between the letters, and try out different kinds of embellishment.
Paying attention to the shape of the letters is probably one of the most interesting aspects of lettering. The more you experiment, the better your chances of giving your letters the presence and personality you are looking for. Serif characters lend themselves particularly well to this kind of exercise. Do not hesitate to experiment and to get inspiration from existing artistic pieces.
