Guidelines and
Information for Filming
in San Francisco

 

 

  1. Filming in San Francisco will be arranged through the Film Office, which will make referrals to departments and other jurisdictions (Police Department, Recreation and Park Department, Muni Railway, Golden Gate National Recreation Area [G.G.N.R.A.], Airport, Bridges, Department of Public Works, the Presidio, Coast Guard, Fire Department, etc.) in order to arrange orderly filming in compliance with the law.

  2. A certificate of insurance will be filed in the Film Office prior to filming, endorsed to the City and County of San Francisco (see Use Agreement for detailed information).

  3. A permit fee to the San Francisco Film Office of $100 to $300 for each day of filming will be expected from each film company, except for nonprofit and student productions.

  4. Uniformed police officers, working voluntary duty on an overtime basis only, will be assigned to motion picture details when the Office of the Chief deems it advisable for public safety and convenience. The number of officers assigned will be determined by the Police Department Coordinating Unit, depending on the extent of filming and other factors. A deposit for police services will be required in advance.

  5. San Francisco Police Department vehicles, uniforms, insignia, and equipment will not be made available for use by film companies. Filming on departmental property must have express written approval of the Chief of Police.

  6. San Francisco streets must be posted for parking or filming 24 hours prior to call time. See Police Department guidelines or contact Film Office for further information.

  7. Residential areas can be used for filming only between the hours of 7 A.M. and 10 P.M. Night shooting between the hours of 10 P.M. and 7 A.M. is restricted without the prior express joint written approval of the Film Office and the Police Department. Commercial areas may be restricted between the hours of 6:30 and 9:30 A.M. and 3:30 and 6:30 P.M., due to rush hour traffic. Otherwise, commercial areas are available for filming. Industrial areas can be used for filming 24 hours a day, with care given not to affect the work activities in the area.

  8. Companies are requested to provide the Film Office and the Police Department with copies of shooting scripts and location schedules so that potential traffic and parking problems can be anticipated and avoided.

  9. A film company, no later than 24 hours before shooting in a residential neighborhood, must notify in writing the residents in the area as to the company, shooting times, and the name, address, and phone numbers of the companies’ local office or representative. Prior to filming, the Film Office must be notified that this information has been distributed.

10. Meals shall not be eaten on public rights-of-way.

11. All production vehicles shall be visibly identified (including equipment rental vehicles) with the name of the production company. Such identification is to be placed in the windshield of each vehicle while on location.

12. The production company shall not interfere with the normal activities of a neighborhood. Filming crews and equipment should not interfere with street sweeping or refuse collection. No littering is permitted and must be cleaned up completely when leaving the location. The public must not be deprived egress or ingress to private or public property.
