Eigenvector centrality gives scores to all vertices in a graph that measure their importance in the network. The score will be an indicator of the connectivity of a particular node to other important nodes in the whole network. When Google created the PageRank algorithm, which assigns a score to each web page on the internet (in order to express its importance), the idea was derived from the eigenvector centrality measure.
