Accessibility

When a website is coded properly, it can be used by all, including disabled users such as blind users. Accessibility and search engines have one thing in common, that is, both of them use machine scraping and read the content that was scraped. Blind users use screen readers to access the application. You can try using NVDA if you use Windows, which can be downloaded from https://www.nvaccess.org/download/. If you are a macOS user, then you can use VoiceOver, which comes built into macOS. A lot of similar principles and rules apply on the website to make it accessible and SEO optimized, such as the following:

  • Use markup to convey the meaning of the content: Use proper elements to convey the meaning of the content; for example, the title of the page should use heading tags. Heading tags should be in order; the h1 tag should be followed by h2, which should be followed by h3, and so on. It is important that the h3 tag doesn't appear before h1 and h2, as that will make the context of the website confusing to the user.
  • Alternative text for image, audio, and video: Images should have alternative text so that a blind user can understand what the image is about. By doing this, even the search engine can understand what the image is about.

Now that we understand why accessibility is important, let's continue with other important things to consider for SEO.
