disaster could be repeated. The primary site is the new environment, because
the original network and computer systems were damaged beyond their
capability to support the business; significant changes, repairs, and replace-
ments have occurred to restore the environment. The restored primary site
must be stress-tested before the mission-critical operations of the business
are transferred back to it. To prevent problems, the least critical functions
should be moved back to the primary site first. Then, after the site shows
resiliency, you can move more critical functions as the network proves its
ability to support the organization once again.
5.3 Disaster Recovery Team Management Actions
Recovery operations begin after the contingency plan has been activated,
damage assessment has been completed (if possible), personnel have been
notified, and appropriate teams have been mobilized. Recovery phase activ-
ities focus on contingency measures to execute temporary IT processing
capabilities, repair damage to the original system, and restore operational
capabilities at the original or new facility. Depending on the recovery strat-
egies defined in the plan, these functions could include temporary manual
processing, recovery and operation on an alternate system, or relocation and
recovery at an alternate site. Teams with recovery responsibilities should
understand and be able to perform these recovery strategies well enough
that if the paper plan is unavailable during the initial stages of the event,
they can still perform the necessary activities.
It is necessary for the management of the disaster recovery phase to be
properly structured and controlled. Where practical, this phase should be
organized in accordance with best project management practices. The
recovery process is likely to require a significant level of coordination, utiliz-
ing diverse resources including public emergency services. During the han-
dling of the disaster recovery process, all events should be planned and
recorded. The planning part of the process is dealt with here. The recording
process is dealt with in the Event Log. This section of the BCP should
establish a suggested format to be used for planning the recovery process.
