About the Contributing Authors

Gary Cokins (Chapter 6) is an internationally recognized expert, speaker, and author in advanced cost management and performance management systems. He is a manager in performance management solutions with SAS Institute, Inc., a leading provider of business intelligence and analytical software headquartered in Cary, North Carolina. Gary received a BS degree in Industrial Engineering/Operations Research from Cornell University in 1971 and an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management in 1974. Gary began his career as a financial controller and operations manager for FMC Corporation and he has been a management consultant with Deloitte, KPMG Peat Marwick, and Electronic Data Systems (EDS).

Gary was the lead author of the acclaimed An ABC Manager's Primer sponsored by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). Gary's second book, Activity Based Cost Management: Making it Work, was judged by the Harvard Business School Press as "read this book first." Gary's third book, Activity Based Cost Management: An Executive's Guide, has ranked number one in sales volume of 151 similar books on BarnesandNoble.com. Bill Flemming (Chapter 4) works in a thought leadership position for SAS's Organization Infrastructure Intelligence where he identifies, defines, and applies technology to solve IT management problems. Bill has more than 20 years of experience with both hands-on IT projects and product thought leadership. His hands-on work includes managing the implementation of large IT System Management and Quality Control projects. In addition, he has marketed system management products and services for some of the industry's leading vendors. His current projects include IT Strategic Performance Management and IT Financial Management, and he has published extensively about each subject. Anthony Hill (Chapter 2) is Chief Technology Officer for Golden Gate University in San Francisco, where he architected an e-business transformation of the university. He has more than 24 years of experience in all facets of information technology as a CTO, software developer, consultant, project manager, and systems integrator. Anthony was included among those named as the nation's "25 Most Influential CTOs" of 2002 by Infoworld Magazine and was selected to the Infoworld 100 in 2003 and the CIO 100 in 2004. He received his MS in Information Technology fromGolden Gate University and his BA in Political Economics from the University of California, Berkeley. He lives in Berkeley with his wife and son.

Michael Hugos (Chapters 1, 3, and Part 1 of Chapter 8) is a partner in AgiLinks LLC. He has 25 years of corporate and consulting experience in all aspects of information technology. He recently spent six years as the CIO of Network Services Company, a national distribution cooperative. He designed and built the suite of supply chain and e-business systems that transformed the company's business model and drove its growth. Prior to this he was a Practice Director at a publicly traded global IT services firm.

In 2003 and 2005 he was awarded the CIO 100 Award for bold and resourceful use of information technology and in 2006 he was awarded the Premier 100 award for career achievement. He holds an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. Mr. Hugos is also the author of two books, Essentials of Supply Chain Management, 2nd Edition and Building the Real-Time Enterprise: An Executive Briefing, both published by John Wiley & Sons. He is a columnist for Computerworld and CIO Magazine and a frequent speaker.

Paul R. Niven (Chapter 5) is a management consultant and noted speaker on the subjects of Performance Management and the Balanced Scorecard.

As both a practitioner and consultant he has developed successful performance management systems for organizations large and small around the globe. His clients include Fortune 500 companies, public sector agencies from all levels, and nonprofit organizations. His books include Balanced Scorecard Step by Step: Maximizing Performance and Maintaining Results (translated in more than a dozen languages), Balanced Scorecard Step by Step for Government and Nonprofit Agencies, and Balanced Scorecard Diagnostics: Maintaining Maximum Performance. Alan Stratton (Chapter 4) is president of Stratton Associates LLC and is a Certified Management Accountant and a Certified Public Accountant. He is also a Board Member and, since 1991, an active participant in CAM-I, a consortium leading development of management methods and techniques in cost, process, and performance management. He currently chairs CAM-I's Planning and Budgeting interest group. Previously, he chaired its Activity Based Planning & Budgeting interest group that published The Closed Loop: Implementing Activity-Based Planning and Budgeting. He is the author of An ABB Manager's Primer, and coauthor of An ABC Manager's Primer (the leading introduction to ABC/M) and Capacity Measurement & Improvement. He was formerly a product strategist and subject matter expert at SAS Institute.

Alan's work has also been published in Management Accounting, Journal of Cost Management, Corporate Controller, CMA Magazine, and As Easy As ABC. Previously, he was an independent ABC/M consultant, Director of Customer Advocacy at ABC Technologies, and held financial management positions at Cost Technology, National Semiconductor, Atari, General Instrument, and GTE. He earned a BS in Accounting and a Master of Accountancy from Brigham Young University.

Dr. Karl Schubert (Chapter 7) is Corporate CTO and Vice President for Xiotech Corporation, Vice President & General Manager of Daticon (a Xiotech Company), and Chairman of Xiotech India, Ltd. He has a proven track record of developing leading-edge hardware, software, and combined product families and delivering them to existing and new market areas.

Prior to joining Xiotech, Karl served as a technology consultant to startup companies associated with Austin Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, and Sierra Ventures. As CTO, COO, and Senior VP of Engineering for Zambeel Inc., he was responsible for driving technology, engineering, and operations teams to produce the first enterprise-class, 4D-scalable, NAS subsystem. As VP and CTO of Dell Inc., he architected Dell's entry into the storage business and was responsible for guiding the storage practice through its first several billion dollars of revenue. Prior to Dell, Karl spent 14 years at IBM, during which time he created the company's OEM open storage subsystems unit.

Karl has been awarded a number of patents for leading-edge technological innovation in storage systems architecture, storage area networks, and other technology areas. He obtained a Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Arkansas, an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kentucky, and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Arkansas. His most recent book, published by John Wiley, is The CIO Survival Guide and he is a guest speaker at professional conferences and a regular panelist in the areas of technology, innovation, and distributed international development.
