Security Considerations

Reports published to SharePoint document libraries are secured using the SharePoint permission sets. This includes user access via user roles, such as reader, member, and administrator, and the ability to lock reports down either at the site, document library, folder, or item level. Report editing capabilities are subject to end-user permission (for example, a user with read only permission will not view the Edit In Report Builder menu option from a report contextual menu within a document library, but an end-user with member role and higher will).

Note

This capability differs from accessing Reporting Services reports via the SQL Server Reporting Services Viewer Web part where the menu item Edit In Report Builder is accessible from the toolbar Actions menu, regardless of user permission.

Securing Reporting Services—Native Mode and SharePoint Integrated Mode

When Reporting Services in configured in native mode, you would ordinarily set users’ security and access to Reporting Services reports via the SQL Server Management Studio Object Explorer. However, once you’ve switched your Reporting Services to SharePoint Integration mode, you will no longer be able to access Reporting Services via the SQL Server Management Studio Object Explorer to modify security. Instead, you will set security within the SharePoint document library where the reports and associated files are stored.
