Distributed Server Environment Consideration

Best practice is to run Reporting Services on a separate server to the SharePoint server. In a multiple-server environment (that is, where SQL Server 2005 and Reporting Services are on separate servers to SharePoint Server 2007 Web front-end servers), you will need to configure Kerberos to enable impersonation of the user account accessing the database server, also referred to as delegation or double hop. Each server will need to be trusted as part of the delegation. Other considerations include configuring a common domain user service account for application pools on Web front-end Reporting Services servers and correctly configuring the Web Service and Windows identity as part of the Reporting Services Configuration tool.

Note

When reviewing Reporting Services, you may choose to run everything on a single-server instance. For details on how to configure Reporting Services and SharePoint on a single server, see "How to: Configure SharePoint Integration on a Standalone Server" at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb677368.aspx.

Additionally, the SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services add-in for SharePoint Technologies must be installed on each Web front-end server within a farm. The Reporting Services add-in only supports SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0; the 32-bit and 64-bit versions can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1E53F882-0C16-4847-B331-132274AE8C84&display=en.

On the Companion Media

See the companion CD for a document titled "Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services–Installation and Configuration Guide for SharePoint Integration Mode." In addition, see the Additional Resources section at the end of this chapter for more references.

Running Reporting Services on a Domain Controller

If you are running Reporting Services on a Windows 2003 server that is configured as a domain controller, you may see the following error message when attempting to grant database access: A New Member Could Not Be Added To A Local Group Because The Member Has The Wrong Account Type. Further details can be found at http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=259473.

Note

We definitely don’t recommend deploying Reporting Services on a domain controller in a production environment. Most likely, you’ll experience the above issue when you are configuring test environments on a standalone server.
