Ellipses

In general, do not use an ellipsis (…) except in syntax lines or to indicate omitted code in technical content. The HTML code for the ellipsis character is …. If you are using a font that does not support the ellipsis character, use three periods with no space between them.

In the user interface, an ellipsis is typically used to show truncation, as in a program name, or to indicate on menus and in dialog boxes that a dialog box will appear to obtain more information from the user. Do not use an ellipsis in this context in documentation.

In printed material, it is all right to use an ellipsis in multiple-part callouts, especially with a screen shot used in a procedure. Ensure that the user’s path through the callouts is unambiguous.

In callouts, insert one character space before and/or after the entire ellipsis, as shown in the preceding example. If the sentence or phrase ends with additional punctuation, such as a period or comma, insert a character space between the punctuation mark and the ellipsis.

In quoted material, an ellipsis indicates omitted text. If the ellipsis replaces the end of a quoted sentence, follow the ellipsis with a closing period, with no intervening space.

If the ellipsis indicates omitted text following the end of the quoted sentence, the ellipsis immediately follows the period, again with no intervening space.
