5. Web Content Management Using Publishing Portals

In this Chapter

Much of the first few chapters of this book have covered topics that would apply to either WSS or MOSS. But this chapter focuses exclusively on using the Web Content Management (WCM) functionality available only in MOSS. In fact, many automatically assume that if you have MOSS, then you must automatically be using publishing. Although this is not always an accurate assumption, it does demonstrate how important the WCM functionality is to MOSS.

In this chapter, you’ll learn about the key WCM concepts of MOSS and see how all of the parts work together to create solutions that address many business problems. The goal is to highlight the WCM functionality that MOSS provides to give you an idea about how to apply these concepts in your own environment. WCM is a complex topic, with entire books and countless white papers written on the subject, so it’s impossible to cover everything within the confines of this single chapter. By the end of this chapter, however, you should understand the possibilities WCM offers and have a good idea of what functionality is the most important to solve your own business problems.
