PART II

Executing the Project

The PMBOK emphasizes project planning above all other process groups. This is evident in the number of processes dedicated to planning. The monitoring and controlling process group comes next when process groups are arranged in order of the number of processes they are made up of. Implicit in the relationship between the two groups are that plans are made, and then the plans are controlled. Planning in the global environment is extensive given the wide array of additional variables. It is a challenge to monitor and control each element of such a plan, but a more significant challenge lies in its execution. What does a global project manager do when executing a global project? What barriers to success may exist in its execution? One approach to answering these questions is to perform a walk-through of processes in the executing process group to better understand how the global environment impacts project execution. This walk-through mirrors the analysis of the knowledge areas carried out in the planning stage of the project.
