About the Authors

Carolyn Abram is a writer. She was the first user of Facebook at Stanford in 2004 and worked for Facebook from 2006-2009. She has used Facebook every day for most of her adult life, acquiring 805 Facebook friends. Despite that, she managed to receive a BA from Stanford (’06) and an MFA from California College of the Arts (’12). Her short fiction has appeared in New California Writing 2013, Switchback, and The Offbeat. She currently lives in Seattle with her husband, children, and dog.

Amy Karasavas is a writer and marketing consultant. She was an early employee of Facebook, working there from 2007 to 2010. She is currently training to become a sommelier (a departure from her days working at start-ups). She lives with her partner Michael and their two dogs in Brooklyn, NY.

Authors’ Acknowledgments

Carolyn: A huge thank you to Amy Karasavas for signing on to working on this edition; your feedback and comments have been invaluable. As usual, thanks to the flexibility and support of the Wiley Team, especially Steve Hayes, who did not know ten years ago that he would still be stuck with me today.

On the home front, I want to thank Eric, Connor, and Lina for simply being. Our family is a delight to me. I also want to acknowledge the enormous web of people who actually make it possible for me to get work done by helping care for my children: the staff at SEED Early Childhood School, a rotating cast of babysitters, our friends, and our families.

In closing, I’d like to thank the billions of Facebook users around the world who are busy connecting, sharing, and generally having fun on Facebook. Keep on signin’ on.

Amy: I can’t say thank you enough to Steve Hayes and Colleen Diamond for their assistance and their wisdom in guiding this process throughout. Also a huge thank you to the rest of the Wiley crew. And to Carolyn for answering my questions and for her excellent work — she sets the bar high.

I need to thank my partner Michael for his love, his jokes, and his continual support (and for keeping me plied with lattes). And to our two dogs we adopted this year — they have filled our lives with mayhem and delight.

I’m thankful to have been a part of Facebook’s early days and to watch it continue to be so impactful.
