Many people deserve thanks for their help with this book. David Cook was kind enough to read the manuscript closely, and his careful eye gave me the benefit of his broad and detailed knowledge of film history. Kevin Welles read and clarified my thinking about key passages. Ken Terres is a long-time colleague and film collector who helps me troubleshoot all things technical and manages our extensive DVD library, which was generously donated to our department by Jim Almoney. Issac Smith and Martha Garrett did wonderful work creating illustrations, and Catilin Cook helped me tweak many of them. My son Evan and my brother Dargan brought their knowledge of music to bear where mine was sorely lacking. The librarians at Jackson Library epitomize the value of public institutions: they are consummate professionals who help people find information.
