Informix SE

Informix SE is a decent desktop database and has the advantage of being very compatible with its larger.UNIX brothers and requiring much less administration. There have been several fairly large systems built around SE, and it always surprises me to see how far people have managed to take these very inexpensive SE systems. On the surface, SE resembles its UNIX brethren. It has a dbaccess program almost identical to the UNIX versions. Installing an SE system on a laptop has long been one of my favorite methods of getting a copy of dbaccess that can work with any of the Informix engines. I've also used SE as part of a demo version of a client/server system. This demo version was used by salespeople, so they were interested in the flashy GUI, and SE served very well in place of the normally-required Online Dynamic Server engine.
