The Atomstack P9 is the latest in a series
of desktop diode-based laser engravers
that have been hitting the market. This
has a few standout features, like tilt
detection, which will disable the laser if
the machine gets knocked over, and a nice
removable touch screen for control. This
is a very bare-bones machine though.
You’re going to manually adjust your focus
and practice your patience on endeavors
like engraving an image. Atomstack
also falls prey to the tendency to market
overall machine power — they sell this
as a 50-watt laser on their website, even
though the actual laser output is only
10 watts! At $499, it’s in the same price
range as a cheap K40 which makes
this kind of a hard sell. If portability is
important, this one definitely comes out
on top.

Mingda Magician X

The Magician X 3D printer is packed with
features, such as auto bed leveling and a
filament runout sensor. The dual Z-axis
screws seem like they provide a very
solid platform for some nice prints, and
our test found the quality out of the box
to be acceptable. It was also very easy to
assemble straight out of the box; getting it
together took just 5–10 minutes.
A couple things to note: The machine
we got didn’t ship with a pre-configured
slicer. Pros won’t have a problem creating
their own config, but beginners will
be lost and confused here. The auto
bed leveling that they tout seems quite
capable, however there’s no fallback way
to manually level; if your auto level system
fails, you’re just out of luck. I learned
this the hard way —my first unit did fail!
Their customer support replaced it very
quickly, though.
This machine does have a glass bed. If
you’re a fan of them, you’ll be happy here.
