Determination seems like the best word to describe
the collective response of Ukrainians as they fight
for their country, for their home, and their freedom.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, described
it as “people power.”
Volunteers in workshops, like the one shown above,
are contributing to the defense of Ukraine. They
are welding barriers for tanks and other vehicles.
The incredible photograph was taken by Dmytro
Kovalenko, a video producer and photographer who
is helping international journalists cover the war
in Ukraine.
The photo appeared on the home page of Maker
Hub (makerhub.org) to help raise support for makers
and makerspaces in the Ukraine. I interviewed Yuri
Vlasyuk and Svitlana Bovkun, who live in Kyiv for
an episode of Make:cast called “Determination”
(makezine.com/2022/03/25/determination-makers-
in-ukraine). They have co-produced 15 Maker Faires
in five cities in Ukraine, dating back to 2015. “We
understand that there is no one who will fight for our
country,” Yuri told me. “We have to fight by ourselves.”
