Use 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS for Makers
to bring your next competition robot to life!
When he’s not busting IT vulnerabilities,
Chicago-based information security
professional Brian Adamson is designing,
building, and competing in BattleBots events.
His interest began while growing up in Alaska,
watching the early 2000s episodes of the show
with his brother. “It always seemed like so much
fun, and the community of builders was, as it is
now, generally very nice and welcoming,” he says.
After moving to the Midwest and discovering
the Central Illinois Robotics Club (CIRC) in
Peoria, Adamson decided to get involved in
their robot league. “I taught myself CAD, made
a ridiculous number of mistakes, was taught
by people smarter and more experienced
than me, and built my first 3lb robot,” he says.
“I even took second place my first year!”
He followed up with a first-place finish in his
second year, and then embarked on more, and
larger, robot builds. His most recent creation,
Claw Viper, brought him to the 2021 season
of that show that originally inspired him. “I
designed that machine, from scratch, using
SOLIDWORKS, and it was actually my first large
project in SOLIDWORKS,” Adamson says. “It’s
a 250-pound monster with over 50 horsepower
— more than 40kW — of drive power alone, it
makes over 1,000 foot-pounds of torque at the
main lift axle, and it has the additional craziness
of a couple hundred pounds of additional
magnetic downforce on the chassis to make it
possible to get all that power to the ground.”
Adamson is now underway on his next entry,
opting to use SOLIDWORKS’ new low-cost CAD
tool for it. “There are a lot of different options out
there for doing design work, and I’ve been having
a great time using 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS
for Makers on my latest combat robotics project,”
he says. “SOLIDWORKS is an incredible tool,
and putting it in the hands of hobbyists and
makers is tremendous — it offers real, industry-
leading software to anyone with a passion for
creating, and creates an incredible pipeline
for people to make their dreams a reality.”
