A Partial List of Process Mapping Software
For reasons discussed in Chapter 3 and because of the continuous change and production of new software, I have chosen to provide only a limited listing of software products that process mappers may find helpful. I comment on none of them, and neither endorse those below nor imply non-endorsement of other products not listed here. The list is only basic programs to support WFMA as discussed in this book—absent by design are the large commercial packages offered by many companies.
My sole objective in providing this list is to acquaint the new or exploratory process mapper with software that may assist in drawing WFMA maps. In nearly every case, should a mapper purchase a drawing product, very little of its potential will be needed to draw the types of maps we create in WFMA. The majority of the mapping can be done using nothing more than the drawing programs bundled with every major word processor and spreadsheet, so no other software is required. About the only real advantage to using more advanced software is the ability to use prepared symbols and quickly rearrange diagrams; done poorly, this can be a disadvantage. Readers are encouraged to explore the Internet on this fluid subject.
