11. A world wider than the Web: End user programming across multiple domains

Many Web tasks involve combining information from multiple sources, for example plotting open rentals on a map or adding legroom descriptions to a list of flights. The chapters in this section propose alternative methods for mixing data from different sources. C3W (clip, connect, and clone for the Web) presents a specialized platform for clipping, connecting, and cloning pieces of Web pages to help users make decisions more easily, such as which bus to take to a movie theater. Mash Maker is a Firefox plugin that allows users to create overlay mashups by interactively extracting and placing data. The d.mix system presents an approach that leverages available Web site services instead of extracting data directly from the HTML Web pages. Finally, the Integrated Task Learning system looks beyond the Web browser and proposes a system that lets users automate tasks and mix data across a variety of desktop applications.
