What Is Java VM?

Java is a cross–operating-system, cross-database language. This versatility is accomplished by the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), which is ported to each specific hardware platform and database that supports Java. The JVM enables Java code to be entirely portable across various computers and database environments. In addition, JVM is the Java interpreter that eliminates the need for a Java compiler for specific computing environments. Plus, it is part of the Oracle9i database, which makes it possible to have either Java-based procedures or PL/SQL-based procedures (or both). One JVM exists for each Oracle Application Server (Oracle9iAS), and it is started when the Apps Server is started.

NOTE

Port— To have a port of software means to have a version that runs in a particular computing environment. Previously in this book, I referred to runtime interpreters. A port exists for each computing environment that will support a particular software.
