Initiate its use at an appropriate time, either early in the project or in response to a crisis.

Keep the milestones small, a day or two in duration.

Be sure that your list of milestones is exhaustive.

Foster accurate milestone-progress reporting.

Regularly assess progress, and recalibrate or replan if you start to slip off the milestone schedule.
