SMIL Modules

After reading earlier chapters, you are now familiar with the modularization of XHTML and the benefits that modularization is anticipated to bring as the nature of the Web changes. SMIL 1.0, like XHTML 1.0, was created as a single, monolithic language. SMIL 2.0 has been defined in terms of modules. By modularizing SMIL, it enables user agents, browsers, or multimedia players to implement parts of the SMIL recommendation that are relevant to a particular use.

The description of SMIL that follows is based on these modules. Modules are not to be divided—either all the function in a module should be implemented or none of it.
