Removal Procedure
Once you have completed the Sorting phase, review the items removed and
sitting in your red-tag area. The goal of any sorting project is to have all
the items removed from the company within 45–60 days. Do not develop a
behavior of holding on to items and moving the pile from one part of the plant
to another. Develop a removal procedure that can be completed within 60 days.
Removal Ideas
◾ Donate to local college or trade schools
◾ Sell items to employees
◾ Sell items through local and web-based want ads
◾ Conduct an auction for the public
◾ Hire an auction house
◾ Send to sister organizations (if items are needed)
Sorting is an effective way to clear the confusion that clutter creates in a process.
You will nd that, even after completing only the Sorting part of 5S, it will be
easier to work in the work area. However, your 5S implementation has just started,
and you have set the tone for the creation of the visual workplace: Set in Order.
