Use corner oor markings and stencils for designating where the trash
container is.
Where inspection tools go is dened by electrical tape as the location markings.
Tool Placement
Ideally, the goal when establishing locations for tools and shadow boards is that
the point of use is the best scenario to reduce motion. Use what we call the
5-footrule: Tools are within a 5-foot reach of the worker. This allows for safe
movement of the worker and reduces congestion.
Frequency of use comes into play as well. In areas of high-frequency use,
tools should be placed right in the work area at the established 5-foot distance.
Set in Order 25
There should be no need for a worker to leave the work area for a tool that is
used consistently. In some situations, a different approach is needed.
For instance, in a maintenance department there are tools that are used all
the time and some tools are used less frequently. Sometimes, tools are used
oncea month or a quarter. The placement of these tools is not as critical;
itmakes no sense to place low-use tools in areas of high-use tools.
Often, for these cases two approaches to placement can be used. Review the
work area and decide, based on the activities, which tools are best suited for
point of use based on frequency. Then, you can create a “community board”
where low-use tools are placed and accessed.
Use your best judgment and always try to minimize motion and transportation.
