Acknowledgments

On January 1, 2020, I began my 42nd year as a full-time writer, photographer, and instructor. Such a long career would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of many people: text and photo editors at magazines and publishers; readers of my articles and books; gallery owners; print collectors; and appreciative students. No one is born knowing how to write well and make compelling photographs. I’d like to thank the many writers and photographers whose words and images inspired me and taught me how to improve my craft. I’d like to thank my parents, who encouraged me to follow the path I found most fulfilling. I’d like to thank my wife, Cora, the love of my life for more than 30 years. Cora is an atmospheric scientist whose perceptive questions, boundless curiosity, and insistence on scientific rigor encourage me to go beyond a superficial understanding of whatever topic is at hand, and whose tolerance of long absences made it possible to make the images in this book. Finally, I’d like to thank the staff of Rocky Nook, particularly my editor Maggie Yates, whose insightful editing and attention to detail made this book the best that it could be.
