Wiskus was then inspired to start a band after attending
Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2015
where Apple introduced Apple Music and its related social
network, Connect. Soon Wiskus and Cieplinski had found
a keyboardist and drummer, and by December 2015, the
band had its first gig.
Because Wiskus was traveling a lot for work, he
worked on music during flights and created a folder for
projects, which he named “Airplane Mode.”
The band has played live shows in a few states and
several countries, including Spain and the Netherlands.
It also has regular gigs a couple of times a month around
New York City.
In 2016, the band performed at WWDC 2016, exactly
one year after Wiskus was inspired as part of the audience.
They played one of the parties where the room was full
of friends and colleagues, many of whom had not under-
stood how serious Wiskus and Cieplinski were about
making it in music.
But the expected success never came, and band
members began to look for other jobs. Just as Gripp was
set to give up, he got a second chance entirely by acci-
dent, thanks to the iPhone and Apple.
Apple’s products have become status symbols, and
musicians across all genres have referenced the tech giant
and its devices in their songs. The iPhone alone appears in
more than 300 songs, mostly by hip-hop artists like Kayne
West, Lil Wayne, Future, and Jay-Z.
But when you search for “iPhone” or anything
Apple related in song lyrics, you’ll probably come across
Gripp’s name first. He has written five or six Apple-related
songs that have gotten him thousands of followers on his
YouTube channel and on streaming services like Spotify.
Anyone who lands on Gripp’s website quickly joins
in on the fun. He’s written infectious songs like “Last Train
to Awesometown,” “Space Unicorn,” “I Am a Banana,”
“Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom,” and “Justin Bieber
