The size of the studio, and the scale and type of production, determine our precise requirements. However, at the upper end of our survey (the studio of 150 m2) there is a need for comprehensive facilities. These can be categorised as technical, production and post-production
Technical: | vision facilities (including lighting) |
sound facilities (including talkback and communications) | |
recording facilities | |
Production: | scenic design |
graphic design | |
costume design | |
make-up design |
Technical facilities are usually permanent features within a studio and its associated environs, and do not change on a day-to-day basis.
The upper illustrations opposite show the possible vision and sound sources for a production. The various ‘boxes’ we see here are examined in detail in later pages.
Production requirements, on the other hand, change from one programme to the next. In order to meet typical production requirements, the various functions shown in the lower illustration are needed.
Most studio complexes require post-production facilities ranging from simple videotape editing using two machines to multi-machine editing facilities complete with digital effects and digital graphics.
There is also a need to consider a sound dubbing suite for post-production work on both location and studio-produced programmes.
