The required synchronization prevents the system from scaling infinitely. All transactions are executed on the relational database instance, which eventually introduces a bottleneck if the system needs to scale out.

This ultimately becomes a challenge for situations with huge amounts of workloads or huge numbers of users. For the vast majority of enterprise applications, however, the scalability of relational databases is sufficient.
