5.8 Correlation analysis
The scatterplot of the data collected for both culture and trust was evalu-
ated and a correlation analysis was performed to determine the extent
of correlation between culture and trust for the data collected. The
Spearman Rho (SR) correlation coefcient was found to be 0.79 at a sig-
nicance of 5%. The correlation result indicated a strong positive correla-
tion between culture and trust, demonstrating that culture and trust are
strongly linked and changes in culture can affect trust among people and
in organizations.
5.9 Hypothesis testing—trust attributes
An analysis was performed to determine if there is a correlation between
the trust attributes and culture. The hypotheses for the attributes of trust
that were evaluated are listed below:
H
B0
: There is no correlation between culture (mechanistic and organic)
and the individual trust attributes in technology-based organizations.
H
B1
: There is a correlation between culture (mechanistic and organic)
and the individual attributes in technology-based organizations.
A correlation analysis was performed to determine if a positive cor-
relation between culture and the attributes of trust existed for the data
collected. The Spearman Rho correlation analysis demonstrated that there
was a signicant correlation between the trust attributes and culture.
Correlation results and p-values are listed in Table5.11.

54 Culture and trust in technology-driven organizations
The openness and honesty attribute correlated highest with a correla-
tion coefcient of 0.76. Correlations of 0.70 or above are generally consid-
ered highly correlated. This attribute is believed to be highly important in
the trust-building process. The resultant p-values of <0.001 were compared
to a signicance level of 0.05 and indicated that the null hypotheses can
be rejected while accepting the alternative hypotheses demonstrating that
there is a correlation between the trust attributes and culture.
5.10 Analysis by organization
An organizational analysis was conducted for organizations par-
ticipating in the study that had adequate survey representation. As a
result, 10 organizations were included in the organizational analysis.
The sample size for the organizations ranged from 11 to 257 survey
participants. The results of the organization analysis show that there
is apositive correlation between culture and trust for each organiza-
tion. The results also show that the more organic a culture was per-
ceived, the higher the level of trust that was present, whereas, the
more mechanistic a culture was perceived, the lower the level of trust
(Figure5.14).
The trust mean for the organizations ranged from 2.7 to 3.8 indi-
cating trust levels from some to great trust. The culture means for the
organizations ranged from 3.52 to 5.5. The organization with the small-
est OTI (2.70) and culture (3.52) scores is Organization G. A lower trust
result was noted among the organizations when the culture was per-
ceived to be more mechanistic. Organization E trust and culture scores
were among the highest at 3.8 and 5.7, respectively. A higher trust result
was noted among the organizations that participated in the study when
the culture was perceived to be more organic. The mean culture and
trust results for each organization along with the correlation coef-
cients are shown in Table5.12. The organizations are listed in order of
trust results.

5.11 Summary of organizational analyses
The culture means for each organization fell on the culture continuum
between the mechanistic and organic regions ranging from 1.0 (mechanis-
tic) to 8.0 (organic). In those organizations included in the organizational
analysis, culture results ranged from 3.52 to 5.50. The organization with the
lowest culture and trust means (organization G) displayed predominately
mechanistic characteristics such as close adherence to the chain of command,
reliance on standards and policies, and specialized job tasks. The organiza-
tion with the highest culture and trust means (organizationE) displayed
