Chapter 6. Project Plans for a SharePoint Server 2007 Deployment

Project planning for a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 implementation is a critical part of the process. The lack of a project plan will most likely result in an unstructured and ill-conceived installation. The best practices of information architecture, governance, design life cycles, and business requirements analyses are usually poorly done, if at all, without a proper project plan. When you begin your project plan, be sure to state how Office SharePoint Server 2007 is addressing your business problems.

Most SharePoint Server 2007 deployments do not have any type of project plan. Because the deployment of SharePoint Server 2007 can be one of the most complex projects you might have undertaken to date, it’s important to understand that the existence of a project plan, in and of itself, is a best practice when it comes to the deployment of SharePoint Server 2007 in your environment.

Using a bad project plan can be just as detrimental as not having one at all. Because opinions vary on what constitutes a great project plan, the way we’ll approach this topic in this chapter is to use Microsoft’s sample SharePoint Server 2007 deployment project plan and then discuss parts of it in order to draw out insights and ideas on best practices for a SharePoint Server 2007 deployment.

On the Companion Media

On the companion CD that ships with this book, you will find the sample project plan from Microsoft that we’re referencing in this chapter. See the Project Sample Plan.mpp file on the CD. Note that you will need Microsoft Office Project 2007 in order to open and use this file.

Understanding Microsoft’s SharePoint Server 2007 Deployment Plan

Microsoft’s sample deployment plan consists of 381 tasks that are mostly divided into four main sections:

  • Envisioning

  • Planning

  • Deployment, Implementation, and Configuration Management

  • Post-Implementation Operations, Optimization, and Business Review

It will not be possible to discuss each step in the project plan, but there are certain steps in the plan that we wish to highlight as they relate to some best practices in SharePoint Server 2007.
