The Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasilia

A vision of architect Oscar Niemeyer, the breathtaking Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasilia reflects the innovative architecture and design that characterize this young and original city. Sweeping skyward, the Cathedral's sixteen gracefully curved columns symbolize hands lifted in prayer, while the unique bell tower replicates a candelabra. Begun in 1959, the Cathedral was designated a Historic Monument in 1967, thereby accessing public funds for its completion. It was dedicated in 1970.
