This book is the largest effort we’ve ever put into compiling our lessons learned so that fellow crime solvers can benefit from them. Although we’d love to pat ourselves on the back, it was not possible without the sacrifices and efforts of many individuals. Here in the acknowledgements, we thank just a few of those people: Kevin Mandia, who founded Mandiant and advocated approaches that have greatly advanced the field of incident response, while never losing touch with those in the trenches. Steve Surdu, who some say sleeps only once per year, on the first day of spring, for 10 minutes—he challenged us to maintain a standard of uncompromising excellence in everything we did. The great personal sacrifices made by those who joined Mandiant in its early days and fought hard against cybercrime, including Kris Kendall, Ken Bradley, Jed Mitten, Chuck Willis, Kris Harms, Bret Padres, Ben Rubin, Nicholas Harbour, David Ross, and Tony Dell. And all of the Mandiant crime solvers since then who have put in more hours than anyone will know.
We are very grateful to the individuals who originally taught us our computer forensics and investigative skills, including Charles Coe, Greg Dominguez, and Richard Wilkinson.
We would also like to thank everyone who contributed to this edition of the book, especially our contributing authors, Marshall Heilman and Ryan Kazanciyan. Also, thanks to those who wrote sections of chapters, including Jeff Hamm, Justin Prosco, Willi Ballenthin, Ryan Benson, Nikes Akens, Robert Honnies, and Greg Dominguez. Also, no book is complete without someone to keep the authors honest. We’d like to thank the following people for providing their candid feedback: Barry Grundy, Danny Mares, Greg Dominguez, James Akers, and John Beers.
Jamie, thank you for writing the Foreword—and Jerry, thanks for suggesting that Jamie write our Foreword.
Once again, we had the best possible technical editor, Curtis Rose. His technical knowledge, attention to detail, and impartial comments provided significant contributions to improve this book. Thank you, Curt.
Finally, we’d like to thank the entire McGraw-Hill Education team, including Brandi Shailer, Amanda Russell, and Amy Jollymore, for their support and patience on this project.
