Work on this book has taken me away from my family for almost every weekend and most evenings over the past year. This book is dedicated to them for their love and understanding: my beloved wife Sangeeta and wonderful children, Rohan, Anuj, Gaurav, and Trisha.

I have worked with many talented individuals during the course of my career. At Aperto Networks, where I served as co-founder and Head of Technology, some of the theories from this book pertaining to broadband wireless networks were successfully put into practice. I would like to acknowledge Paul Truong and Tassos Michail from Aperto in helping me understand the intricacies of applying mathematical results to systems operating in the real world. Charlie Perkins and Dr. Mustafa Ergen at Wichorus have played a big role in my thinking on the modeling of complex systems that occur in the cellular wireless context. I would also like to thank Prof. Armand Makowski, my advisor from my PhD days at the University of Maryland, for instilling the love of mathematical modeling and being a good friend over the ensuing decades; Prof. Anujan Varma from the University of California at Santa Cruz and Dr. Leandros Tassiulas from Yale University for serving as my brilliant collaborators during my early years in Silicon Valley; and Prof. Yannis Viniotis from North Carolina State University, with whom I go back more than 30 years, for helping me understand high-speed networking concepts, during my time with IBM’s Networking Division in the 1990s. Prof. Viniotis also served as a reviewer for this book, and the content is immeasurably improved as a result.
