Sun is the inventor of Java technology. Apart from Java and Web Services technologies, Sun also supplies diversified technologies and software products, including an application server, middleware, a directory server, and an identity management product. Sun has recently rebranded iPlanet™ and Forte™ products as Sun ONE™.

Figure B-9 shows the Sun ONE™ architecture framework for building Web Services. It is a meta-architecture framework. In addition, there are supporting software products (branded under Sun ONE™) that provide each of the architecture components. Recently, N1 is the vision and new technology strategy.

Application Server

  • Sun ONE™ Application Server 7.0 (previously iPlanet™ Application Server)— SOAP is bundled in Sun ONE™ Application Server 6.5. SOAP 1.2, WSDL generation; JAX Pack is bundled in version 7.0

Middleware

  • Sun ONE™ Integration Server (previously iPlanet™ Integration Server) 3.0— B2B and EAI editions. It is SOAP enabled and integrated well with UDS, XML Adapter, and Sun ONE™ Studio. The new release supports ebXML

  • Sun ONE™ XML Adapter 1.0

  • Sun ONE™ Message Queue 3.0— a flagship JMS 1.1 compliant product. It supports JAXM

Developer Tools

  • Sun ONE™ Studio (previously Forte™ for Java) 3.0/4.0— developer IDE with plug-in modules for SOAP and WSDL generation

  • Sun ONE™ Unified Development Server 5.0— building block and developer platform for Sun ONE™ Integration Server and Sun ONE™ Application Server, together with Sun ONE™ Studio (previously Forte™ for Java)

  • Web Services Developer Pack 1.1— an all-in-one JAX-SOAP-UDDI-ebXML development kit
