Summary

In this chapter, we learned about the various sensors and motors that come with EV3. We used the Port View application to study the sensors in some detail. We learned the various operating modes associated with each sensor and the sort of values they return.

We studied the DC characteristics of motors, which allowed us to understand the differences between the medium and large motors. We used the Motor Control application to manually control both. We ended the chapter by constructing a simple rover, our first manually operated robotic construction.

This chapter gave us an insight into the capabilities, shortcomings, and idiosyncrasies of EV3's sensors and motors and will allow us to make crucial decisions when we start designing robots to carry out specific tasks.

In the next chapter, we will put this information to use when we learn how to program robots on the EV3 brick itself using its built-in visual programming language.
